Design
ERIC DUONG
I dropped out of pre-medical studies during my last semester, and it set me on a path filled with exciting twists and turns. In 2010, I made one of the best decisions of my life when I graduated with a degree in Visual Communications.
Initially, I embarked on a journey in the design world, spending a few years honing my skills in print design, web design, and marketing design at creative agencies. However, as the industry landscape evolved, I recognized the importance of adapting. That's when I made the transition to user experience design. Surprisingly, the shift wasn't too challenging because the foundational principles of "good design" from my graphic design background proved to be invaluable in crafting user-friendly interfaces.

My career continued to evolve as I ventured into the startup scene. Working remotely and traveling to cities like London, Munich, and Beijing, I gained valuable insights into doing more with less and achieving maximum scalability. This experience ignited my entrepreneurial spirit.

A significant turning point came when I returned to my birth country, Vietnam, after three decades of living in Seattle. It was during this visit that I witnessed something truly captivating – street vendors making a living. I observed tourists flocking to banh mi (Vietnamese sub sandwich) carts, effortlessly placing orders and enjoying their meals. This experience sparked a revelation during one of my long flights home: banh mi shops in North America had untapped potential.

Inspired by a Vietnamese street vendor, I established Obanhmi (where "Ổ bánh mì" literally translates to "loaf of bread") in Vancouver, B.C. I spent 24 weekends meticulously applying the vendor's approach to my own business. As a result, Obanhmi has evolved into a successful, fully automated local chain with eight outlets.
Currently residing in Seattle with my wife and two beloved fur babies, I find myself driven by curiosity about emerging technologies and their potential impact on the design industry. My interests range from blockchain and decentralized data and finance to the metaverse, automation using robots, AI, and the evolving landscape of the hybrid workplace. These subjects intrigue me because I believe they will usher in another significant shift in the design industry, similar to the time I switched from traditional print design to UX, and I'm eager to be part of that transformative journey.
